Licenses renew annually on the last day of the licensees assigned month. CPAs must complete at least 120 hours of CPE in each three-year calendar period prior to their license expiration month, with a minimum of 20 hours in each one-year period.
Persons who release (sign) or authorize the release of reports on attest and/or compilation services provided to the public must annually obtain a minimum of eight hours of CPE related to attest and/or compilation services.
All licensees must complete a 2 hour Virginia-specific ethics course every year as part of the 120/20 requirement. The Virginia Board of Accountancy has ruled this 2-hour requirement can only be met by taking course material provided by the Virginia Society of CPAs.
All required CPE can be acquired through self-study.
Yes. The Board accepts courses offered by sponsors who are members of NASBA's National Registry and QAS sponsor approval programs. As a member of NASBA’s Registry and QAS sponsor approval program, our courses are accepted for credit in Virginia.
As a member of the NASBA Registry and QAS sponsor approval programs, we are required to conform to the measurement standards contained in the Statement on Standards of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programs developed jointly by NASBA and the AICPA. Under these Standards our credits are based upon 1 CPE credit for every 50-minutes of study time, as determined by the average test results of CPAs pre-testing the material prior to publication.
